The International Coastal Clean-up event was held on September 17th! We began the clean-up at 9am and spent a couple hours cleaning up Edisto! Ida Tipton, from FRESPACE, is tallying up the numbers but there were a lot of cigarette butts, plastic bottles & plastic lids found. Fishing line, foam and aluminum cans were also picked up. Some of the more unusual pieces found were shingles, flip flops, teddy bear, toys, sunglasses, a broken chair and a bicycle tire. There were 90 volunteers with 26 of those being junior high and highschool children. We cleaned up all of the beach and beach access from Bay Point to Jeremy Inlet, Bay Creek Park, Bay Creek, Highway 174 from Enterprise Bank to Botany Bay Road. The groups participating: Edisto Beach State Park, FRESPACE (sponsored lunch), Low Country Leadership Charter School, Lions Club, Edisto Watersports, Wyndham Green Team and EdistoPride. Botany Bay and their team of volunteers will be conducting a beach clean-up on Tuesday October 11th due to hunting season. The Town of Edisto Beach picked up trash bags in town and Mayor Darby served the subway sandwiches. Thanks to everyone who participated or supported the 2016 Beach & River Sweep in Edisto, it is really important to keep this paradise clean!
